Riding Tip - Intro to Tackling Obstacles

It's an amazing feeling to know how to tackle basic obstacles and have confidence in your abilities.

When we are out exploring back roads, forest trails and areas that a generally more adventurous than the general public care to wander, we will come across a fallen tree limb or similar obstacle.

Having the skills and knowledge to safely address the situation, is the difference between an awesome ride home to share stories with your friends and family, or your friends and family talking about your latest war wound!

Here's a brief list of the ABCs:

A - If the obstacle is under axle height your bike will roll over with correct body position, constant momentum and technique. If the obstacle is at or near obstacle height, use a smaller "kicker" to assist the wheels upward motion before the obstacle.

B - Always try to set yourself up square/right angle to the obstacle and approach in a central, standing position with shoulders forward.

C - Do not attempt to "wheelie" the front wheel over the obstacle, we need the front to impact the obstacle to help clear the bash plate and keep stability.

Be aware of:

  1. Being too fast or too slow
  2. Rushing the decision or changing your mind at last moment
  3. Not practicing this technique in a controlled space ie: Attend a Riding course ;-)
