Wet after a ride?

Do you just stick the bike in the shed afterwards and let it fester?

Who's gone to the gear bag or wet boots after a few days in the shed or trailer...Yes, yummy right!

Did you know, you can look after it with a few simple products that will keep things in good order or at least easier to clean for the next adventure?

We all love splashing around in puddles. Nothing has changed since we were kids…the puddles just got bigger and the splashes just got higher! It’s an added achievement to enjoy successful creek river crossings too.

In this article we're focusing on a few bike simple items that can be over looked after, and sometimes during, a multi-day ride.

Get yourself a good quality anti-corrosive mutli spray is top of the list. Most of these sprays have a combination of fish oil, kerosine and surfactants that protect metal and many external mechanical moving parts.

Traditionally, these sprays have been known as CRC or WD 40 and most lubricant brands have a version. We use Putoline spray, which works excellent. It's a great size canister and goes a long way. There's also a small bumbag size can that is refillable to take with you on the trails.

Where do you put it?

Firstly, it's always best to clean away dirt and debris before adding a lubricants to chains etc so in an ideal world wash or clean the areas down. You don't want to add lubricant to dirt or sand as it becomes a cutting paste to increase wear rather than reduce it.

Okay, so chains are a good starting point. Anything that has a pivot. So your footpeg springs, side stand pivot points on your side stand or center stands, your footpegs around your foot brake levers & gear lever folding tips.

Generally, most pivot points or points that are moving, the areas that you want to just have just a brief spray of this multi spray, and that will clear out the water and leave a residue of waterproof lubricant as well.

You don't want this stuff on your brake disc or calipers so be cautious about over spray or areas that could drip lubricant onto them. Your wheel bearings & suspension linkages have dust seals packed with grease and should be avoided with these spray type products. Those items are serviceable by a professional.

Next on this list - a good quality silicone spray is a great one to use under your guards, bash-plate and where there could be mud build up. Its also is a really good one to use on the top of your guards/fenders, headlight covers and things like that, because silicon spray is a clear non slip coating it also rejuvenates plastics, stops bugs, mud and debris from bonding to the surface. They just slide off much, much easier when it comes to washing the bike properly once you are home safe and sound.

Just like your brakes; protect your seat from getting lubricant and non-slip sprays on them or you'll be in for an "exciting" ride next time out!
